Family and friends are mourning the loss of an off-duty Border Patrol agent, who died in a gruesome crash early Thursday morning.

The crash happened just after 3am on the 12000 block of Edgemere in far East El Paso.

The victim, 25-year-old Osvaldo Munoz, played football and graduated from Gadsden High School with honors in 2002.

According to the school’sprincipal,Munoz joined the Border Patrol right after he graduated. Border Patrol officials sayMunoz was off-duty when he crashed his car.

El Paso Police say he was speeding down Edgemere when he lost control of his Honda Civic and slammed into a telephone pole.

Munoz was going so fast the impact split his car in two, with half the vehicle wrapped around the pole, and the other half ending up several yards away.

Police are still trying to determine if alcohol played a part in the crash.

Osvaldo’s family declined to talk to ABC-7 Thursday afternoon, saying this was a very difficult time for them and that they were not ready to talk about what happened.
