UTEP Freshman QB Shines In Scrimmage

Redshirt fresman quarterback Carson Meger completed 10 of 17 passes for 167 yards and was responsible for the only touchdown of the day on Friday in the Sun Bow during the Miners’ first scrimmage of Spring.

Meger connected with sophomore wide receiver Lavorick Williams for a 32-yard touchdown in the 80-play scrimmage. Junior Mike Scott booted three field goals — from 28, 37 and 32 yards respectively — to complete the scoring.

“It was a good, not great, scrimmage I would say,” UTEP coach Mike Price said in a news release. “We have some work to do. I feel like I’m a judge on American Idol right now, and not a nice one.”

Meger and sophomore quarterback Tim Curry completed 16 passes for 246 yards. Williams was the Miners’ leading receiver with two catches for 84 yards, and freshman Domingo Torres, a product of El Paso’s Montwood High School, ran four times for 41 yards.

“Both quarterbacks played well,” Price said. “We had a few problems with offsides and quarterback exchanges. Torres ran very well and the o-line blocked well for the run at times.”

UTEP has nine practices remaining in its Spring schedule and starting on Tuesday suspended quarterback Trevor Vittatoe will return to the team.
