Police: Gunman Fired Shotgun At East Side Home’s Front Door

Police are looking for the gunman involved in an early morning shooting that left an East Side man with minor injuries.

Shortly after 2:45 Sunday morning, a police officer responded to the 11600 block of John Weir after a shooting was reported. When the officer arrived at the home, he noticed the front door of a residence had gunshot damage. The officer also heard residents screaming for help from inside the home.

The officer feared for the safety of the people inside the home and forced his way inside. According to police officials, a resident of the home, 55-year-old Daniel Varela, was grazed by the gunfire on the left side of his head.

Varela told the police officer he heard his doorbell ring and noticed a man outside in his yard. He did not open the door but saw a second person walking up to his front door. That person then fired a shotgun at the front door, according to Varela.

Police officials said Varela refused to be taken to the hospital. No arrests have been made.
