Tim Floyd Adds Another Assistant Coach To Staff

UTEP men’s basketball coach Tim Floyd has hired William Small as an assistant coach.

“I have known William for many years and he comes highly recommended by two coaches who have worked for me in the past, specifically James Green,” Floyd said in a news release. “He has enjoyed success recruiting all over the South. He has recruited Louisiana very hard. Our teams at USC had four starters from the state of Louisiana. He has recruited Mississippi, and we’ve had great players from there over the years. He has recruited Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.

“He has experience recruiting to isolated areas and that will serve him well, because at times we’ve had to go great distances to find players. He brings a lot of maturity and experience to UTEP and will do a tremendous job for us,” Floyd said.

Small has more than 15 years of college coaching experience, primarily in the Southeast. Most recently he spent three seasons working under Rod Barnes at Georgia State.

A native of Winona, Miss., Small is embarking on his second tour of duty in Conference USA. He was an assistant coach at Tulane during the 2006-07 season, helping the Green Wave to a 17-13 mark and 9-7 record in league play.

Small also coached previously at Cowley Community College (1995-97), Alabama-Huntsville (1997-98), Tennessee-Martin (1999-00), Southeastern Louisiana (2000-03), Western Kentucky (2003-05) and Troy (2005-06) after starting his career as a graduate assistant at Delta State in 1994-95.

He was on staff as Southeastern Louisiana set a school record for Southland Conference wins in back-to-back seasons. His second year at Western Kentucky (2004-05) produced a 22-9 record and a trip to the NIT — the Hilltoppers’ first postseason berth in 10 years. Small helped recruit Courtney Lee, the 2005 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, while at WKU.

Small played at Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss., earning a bachelor’s degree in 1993. He has a daughter, Chiya.
