Ex-UTEP Player’s Past Could Keep Him From NBA; Caracter Could Join Navy

Derrick Caracter, the 6-9, 280-pound junior center and child prodigy who found refuge at UTEP after failing to live up to expectations at Louisville, is hoping for the best in next month’s NBA draft. But it is hard to tell whether any GM will risk picking a man-child who, despite his size and ability, wound up being perceived as an out-of-shape, uncoachable problem for much of his well-traveled career.

Caracter told the New York Daily News he is considering joining the Navy if he goes undrafted.
