World Cup Fans Showing Up On DWI Web Page

The World Cup is being played in South Africa, but there’s plenty of partying going on right here in the Borderland. And the El Paso Police Department’s DWI mugshots may be proof of that.

Last Thursday, the same day Mexico beat France 2-0, there were a dozen people picked up for driving while intoxicated in El Paso, prompting the question: Does the world cup mean more DWI’s?

It appears so.

The World Cup brings a world of excitement to the Borderland! But there may be a little too much celebrating going on in some cases.

According to the El Paso Police Department, five people were arrested for driving while intoxicated on Thursday, June 10th for DWI, followed by six on June 11th, seven on June 12th and six on June 13th.

There were two last Monday, three last Tuesday, seven on Wednesday and then 12 on Thursday, the day Mexico faced France in a 12:30 p.m. MT match.

“Any sporting event where people are drinking i’m sure it’s going to be higher,” said El Pasoan Katherine Bogue.

Officials from the El Paso Police Department could not tell us if a dozen arrests is more than usual for a Thursday. They added that more than the World Cup, more DWI units on El Paso roads could be a factor.

But if you take a closer look at the photos on the DWI page, you’ll find three in a row arrested after the Mexico-France game were wearing Team Mexico jerseys.

El Paso’s Alicia Silva said soccer fans need to know when enough is enough.

“You should designate somebody or even watch it at home,” Silva said.

“To have a good time and celebrate your country is fine,” said El Pasoan Richie Romero, “but putting people’s lives in jeopardy, that’s definitely of concern.”

“Makes me want to stay home more,” said West El Pasoan Marcy Alires.

EPPD officials found only one day over the past month that topped last Thursday’s dozen DWI’s, and that was June 3rd, another Thursday, when there were 15.

Game 7 of the NBA Finals was also the same night, but ABC-7 did not find any Laker’s or Celtic’s jerseys on the web site.

Everyone is innocent, remember, even if their picture appears on the web site, until proven guilty.
