Tennis Courts Open For The Holidays

ABC-7 received an e-mail from Andress High School’s tennis coach, inviting the public to use their facilities during the break.

Meanwhile, the nice weather is bringing players to Franklin High School courts.

“It’s awesome. Knowing that we can come out and play tennis, knowing that we don’t have to be a member of a country club, knowing that we don’t have to try and jump the fence to try and get into the tennis courts so we can just come here any time,” said Franklin tennis court user Michael Bell.

But not all public school courts are open.

Coronado High keeps its tennis courts under lock and key all of the time. A decision that has some players frustrated because Coronado High courts are new and offer amenities that many other public courts just don’t have.

“Their facilities are really nice and everything, but the gates are locked and it’d be really nice to play there instead cause they have lights,” said Bell. “We’ve only been out here an hour and a half, and we have to get ready to go because it’s already getting dark.”

The El Paso school district administrative offices are closed for the holidays.

Coronado High tennis coach Jerry Pippins was asked why the courts are closed to the public. He said he did not want to comment.
