Officials Caution 8-Year-Old Las Cruces Girl’s Death Not Confirmed To Be From H1N1

A little girl from Las Cruces might be the first H1N! death in the Borderland in more than a year.

Savanna McCann, 8, came down with a fever and cough on Tuesday of last week and died suddenly on Saturday.

Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Stan Rounds said, “We have also taken the precaution of deep cleaning. I want to point our regular cleaning agents and protocols are sufficient to eliminate the H1N1 virus and other viral type infections.”

An official with the New Mexico Department of Health in Las Cruces said they did not have an official cause of death as of Tuesday afternoon. He said New Mexico is at a “regional level of flu” and that “we are going to see deaths.”

The Dept. of Health official also said it’s still not too late to get flu shots.
