Family Of Man Seriously Hurt In Fight Speaks Out Against Violence

Two weeks ago, a father’s life was changed because of one violent night.

Now, family and friends want his story to be a reminder that violence is never the answer, and they will hold an anti-violence rally in his honor.

Victor Vasquez, who has two children, was celebrating his 30th birthday when, his family said, a fight broke out and one of his co-workers got out of hand.

“This story just happened to be wrong-place-wrong-time type of things, ” said Vasquez’s older brother, Freddy Vasquez.

Freddy Vasquez said Victor was at a popular East Side restaurant-bar when he tried to stop a fight and was hit on the head before falling and hitting his head on the pavement.

“He doesn’t like to get into things like that. He’s just very gentle, just a loving guy,” said Freddy Vasquez, who described his brother as a “peacemaker.”

Victor Vasquez fell so hard, he suffered a brain injury. Moments later, Freddy Vasquez got a phone call — a call he said no family member ever wants to get.

“Anytime you hear ‘brain injury,’ you think the absolute worst,” Freddy Vasquez said. https://ibpublish.ibsys.com/cms/cms2/index.cfm Andre Billups, 28, Victor Vasquez’s co-worker was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.

“It’s unfortunate that people’s tempers just escalate so rapidly. We live in a culture where sometimes machismo — where the adrenaline sort of fires us up the adrenaline — (and) you just have to step away, ” Freddy Vasquez said.

Victor Vasquez’s story has inspired more 1,000 friends to come together on Facebook and organize the anti-violence rally to help his family cope with the incident.

”It’s times like these that the human compassion comes out, and I don’t wish this on anyone,” Freddy Vasquez said .

The anti-violence rally will be Sept. 18 in the parking lot of Firestone at 10780 Pebble Hills.
