Police identify 11-Year-Old Girl Killed While Crossing Street Near School

El Paso Police identify the 11-year-old girl killed after a truck strikes her and two friends near an East El Paso elementary school.

According to officials 11-year-old Michelle Solis was killed after being struck by a pickup truck early Tuesday evening. Two other children, 11-year-old Sandy Hernandez and 9-year-old Andrew Meraz were also involved in the pedestrian accident. Hernandez was transported to a local hospital, while Meraz was not struck.

The pedestrian wreck happened at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Lee Blvd. and Edgemere in East El Paso, steps away from Bill Sybert Elementary School.

Police said Solis, Hernandez and Meraz were attempting the cross the street while a “Do Not Walk” sign was up. Two 11-year-old girls were struck by a Chevy pick up truck. Both girls were taken to University Medical Center, where one of them died and the other remains hospitalized. The third child was not hit. Poilice said they believe he is a boy.

The driver of the truck stayed at the scene and has not been charged with any crime. Police have not revealed the identities of anyone involved.

Socorro Independent School District Officials confirmed the girls studied at Bill Sybert Elementary School. They said grief counselors will be on hand to help staff and students.
