2 People Killed In Head-on Collision On Highway 70

Two people are dead after a head-on collision at 6 a.m. Thursday on highway 70 in southern New Mexico.

This is the second crash on that highway this week.

“Obviously it’s a double fatality and it’s a very sad situation,” said Dan Trujillo, Las Cruces Police Dept. spokesman.

Investigators said the driver of a white pickup truck lost control driving west on Highway 70 and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes where he crashed into a grey pickup truck head on.

The driver of the grey truck died at the scene. The other driver was taken to Memorial Medical Center where he died.

New Mexico State Police investigators don’t know what caused this crash, which happened just a few miles away from where Monday’s serious rollover occurred in Highway 70.

“Unfortunately there’s no center divide between east and westbound lanes of traffic and I think that is something that the Las Cruces Police Department would encourage the city, the state to follow through to get some kind of protection there because this is at least the second crash this week that we’ve had there where a vehicle has crossed the center line,” Trujillo said.
