UT Newspaper’s Cartoon Of Travon Martin Causing Uproar

ABCNews

An editorial cartoon by the University of Texas at Austin newspaper is making waves on campus and beyond.

The illustration by Daily Texan staffer Stephanie Eisner shows a woman sitting in a chair marked “media.”

The book she is reading from is called “Treyvon (sic) Martin and the case of yellow journalism.”

The woman is saying to the child, “And then the big bad white man killed the handsome, sweet, innocent ‘colored’ boy.”

A month ago, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin of Florida was shot and killed while returning to his home after buying candy at a nearby convenience store. George Zimmerman, the man who shot Martin, was a self-appointed neighborhood watch volunteer who told authorities he killed Martin in self-defense.

The Daily Texan released a statement Tuesday night saying in part, ” The editorial board recognizes the sensitive nature of the cartoon’s subject matter. The views expressed ini the cartoon are not those of the editorial board. They are those of the artist. It is the policy of the editorial board to publish the views of our columnists and cartoonists, even if we disagree with them.”
