West El Paso Crash Kills Woman
El Paso County Sheriff’s Office officials responded to a single vehicle wreck in west El Paso Tuesday afternoon that killed one woman.
The single-vehicle wreck occurred at mile marker 4 on Interstate 10 just after 1 p.m.
Officials said deputies who arrived on the scene found a 1998 Ford Expedition. An investigation revealed that the car was driving in the inside lane when the rear tire blew out. The driver, 69-year-old Pedro Mejia, lost control of the vehicle, traveled across the interstate and rolled over.
The passenger of the vehicle, 59-year-old Bertha Mejia, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car. She was taken to an area hospital where she died upon arrival.
The pair were from Las Cruces and were headed back after a shopping trip to El Paso, officials said.
Officials said the driver was wearing a seat belt and only received minor injuries. Speed and alcohol were not factors in this crash.
