Magoffin Home Reopens
More than a half a million dollars worth of restoration was put into the Magoffin Home which, after being closed for a year, is back open and on display.
The executive director of the Texas Historical Commission said a year ago the Magoffin Home was in poor shape.
He said wood was painted over to look like stone, the roof had numerous issues and parts of the adobe structure were crumbling. The disrepair was a major concern, considering the adobe structure is one of the commission’s 20 sites they run throughout the state.
Closing the building down for renovations wasn’t easy, but those involved insist it was the right thing to do.
“It’s been closed for so long. I know that has an impact on the local economy. So, getting it back open again is fabulous,” said Texas Historical Commission member Mark Wolfe. “As an agency we use the tag line, ‘real places, telling real stories,’ and this is a place with a lot of great stories.”
Before the home was closed and money was pumped into both interior and exterior fixes, it drew thousands of people a year.
The structure is listed on the United States’ National Register of Historic Places, because it was built in 1875 by Joseph Magoffin. .
The Magoffin home is open for tours: Tuesday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. with a $4 admission fee.
