Only On ABC-7: Baby’s Grandparents Heartbroken By Alleged Abuse

Jerry Hernandez burst into tears as he remembered seeing his 20-month-old granddaughter in the hospital after she was airlifted in on Thursday.

“I can’t see how someone can do that to her, and she’s only 18 months and already she’s gone through this twice,” Hernandez told ABC-7.

Police found Hernandez’s granddaughter, Nancy-Lynne Reyes, bleeding and disfigured from injuries they allege were caused by her mother’s boyfriend, Juan Morales.

“It’s hard to see a child in that condition,” Hernandez said.

Doctors reported the toddler had fractures in both arms and bruises all over her body, including her chest, head, and legs.

Hernandez said he had no idea this was going on since his daughter, Victoria Gutierrez, would not let he or his wife see the baby.

“It wasn’t until now that I found out because I hadn’t had contact with my daughter in about a week. So I didn’t know what was going on. It shocked me,” Hernandez said.

But police believe the abuse against Nancy-Lynne has been going on for more than a few weeks.

Hernandez said this isn’t the first time the baby has been abused.

“I know this incident has happened before last year with the biological father of the baby. That incident happened where he tried to hit my daughter and ended up hitting the baby, hitting her in the face, and slamming her head into a cinder block wall,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said that man was arrested for that and Gutierrez ran away from the situation. He told me he’s heartbroken that his daughter is putting her baby in danger again.

“This is the second time, and it’s not going to happen anymore,” Hernandez said. “After watching the news last night and finding out what she did, it’s hard for me to forgive my daughter because the person that depended on her, she failed and very badly. The outcome could have been worse and if it wasn’t for that woman Lulu I think my granddaughter probably would have passed away.”

Lulu, also known as Lourdes Acosta, was the one who called police after Morales got into a fight with a man identified as Tony, who blamed Morales for the baby’s injuries. Police said they had no idea there was an injured baby on the property and found her after they looked around.

Hernandez told ABC-7 Nancy-Lynne is recovering after having surgery on both of her arms. Hernandez and his wife took the baby home Saturday afternoon.

“She wants to get up and walk. She’s starting to express her feelings. She’s playing around. My wife is up there with her right now, and she’s in good hands right now,” Hernandez said.

Unfortunately, Hernandez said he and his wife are not financially prepared to take care of Nancy-Lynne, especially after they found her mother’s apartment empty with no clothes or food for the baby. They are asking anyone who is willing to help to offer monetary donations or donations of baby items to assist them in this difficult time.
