Wildfires Burn Through Southern New Mexico
Gila National Forest officials are reported a new fire about 15 miles northeast of Reserve near Aragon, New Mexico.
Fire crews and helicopters are providing assistance with initial attack efforts on what’s been called the Wagon Tongue fire.
Reports of the new fire came just hours after New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez authorized the deployment of national guard soldiers to secure fires across the state.
Meanwhile, the blaze called the Whitewater-Baldy fire has burned more than 122,000 acres.
The fire is heading toward the New Mexico ghost town of Mogollon.
Sunday’s light winds allowed for fire crews to focus on setting up protection lines on key flanks of the fire. They’re also focusing on getting water dropped on the fire for the first time in several days.
