Countdown To The First Round: One-On-One With Legendary Trainer Freddie Roach
With just two days away from the title showdown in the Sun Bowl, boxers Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. & Andy Lee are making final preparations.
The two will weigh-in Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre in downtown El Paso. It’s open to the public.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the champ, has a record of 45-0-1 while Andy Lee is 28-1. Tens of thousands of people are expected to pack the Sun Bowl for Saturday’s bout, also seen on HBO pay-per-view.
Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee have both said they predict victories. Boxing insiders are predicting the bout will go all 12-rounds. In Thursday’s ABC-7 sportscast, former Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. also mentioned he thinks the fight will go the distance.
ABC-7 Anchor Paul Cicala also had a sit-down interview with Boxing Hall of Fame Trainer Freddie Roach.
Roach arrived to El Paso, after the controversial loss of another one of his fighters, Manny Pacquiao, to Timothy Bradley. Roach and others hope Saturday’s bout at the Sun Bowl won’t see the controversy that unfolded after the recent Bradley-Pacquiao decision.
Seats for the bout at the Sun Bowl are still available, with the cheapest tickets going for as low as $25. The preliminary fights will begin around 6 p.m., and the main event is expected to start after 9 p.m. El Paso/Juarez/Las Cruces time.
Thousands of fight fans are expected to cross the border from Ciudad Juarez, and other parts of Mexico, to watch the fight in person in El Paso, TX.
The Sun Bowl, on the campus of UTEP, overlooks the Rio Grande and also has Juarez as a backdrop. Stay tuned to KVIA ABC-7 for in-depth coverage throughout the next few days.
