Fast-Moving Storms Blow Into Area

The storms rolled in with furious winds. They snapped power lines, tore up signs and kicked up dust.

With the same intensity, emergency dispatch lines lit up as people began reporting the damage left in the storm’s path.

Vehicles on the freeway were seen struggling to stay in their lanes, light beams on, trying to improve visibility on the road.

At the Sun Bowl, where work crews spent the day erecting the ring for Saturday’s middleweight championship bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee, the tarp covering the stage was flapping like a silk sail.

The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings starting at 6:15 p.m. for El Paso and Doa Ana counties, then let them expire at 7 p.m. once the storms had dissolved.

The storms packed a punch. The NWS office in Santa Teresa, N.M. recorded a 61 mph gust with the storm that moved through west El Paso and southern Doa Ana counties.
