Search and Rescue team assists family down Franklin Mountains

El Paso Search and Rescue crews assisted a family down the Franklin Mountains after a hiker became injured, and could not complete her hike.

According to the fire department, fire officials were sent to the area of Wyler Aerial Tramway at around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

A 9-1-1 call was made indicating three hikers on the Directismo trail were in need of assistance.

Officials learned a Clint family, including a 38-year-old mother, 43-year-old father, and 9-year-old daughter, were hiking at around 3:45 p.m. When the mother sprained her ankle.

She was unable to walk back down the trail, officials said.

Park Rangers located the family, and called in the Combined Search and Rescue team.

A total of 21 crew members trekked the trail, and located the family. This took around 35 minutes, officials said.

After meeting up with the stranded family, paramedics began treating the woman.

Official said they took the father and daughter down the mountain first, due to the terrain and nightfall approaching. They reached the bottom of the mountain at around 10 p.m.

The team then retrieved the mother, using a special stretcher designed for difficult terrain, according to fire officials. She was taken off the mountain after midnight, and treated for her sprained ankle at Del Sol Medical Center.
