Man wanted on attempted murder charge, shootings in El Paso, Chaparral arrested

Ramon Montoya, 23, of El Paso, was arrested Tuesday morning by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force (LSFTF) in El Paso early without incident.

Montoya was being sought by the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO) and the El Paso Police Department (EPPD) for his alleged involvement in two separate shooting incidents.

On March 2, 2014, Montoya was allegedly involved in a shooting that occurred in El Paso’s Lower Valley. According to police reports, the victim was walking down the street when he was shot several times. The EPPD gang unit identified Montoya as being the alleged shooter and obtained a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On March 5, 2014, DASO started an investigation into a shooting that occurred in Chaparral, New Mexico.

Reports indicated that Montoya had been involved in an argument with the victim when Montoya allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the leg.

DASO identified Montoya as the alleged shooter and obtained multiple arrest warrants for attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and two counts of contributing to delinquency of a minor.

On March 11, 2014, members of the LSFTF received information that Montoya was in the Montana Vista area of El Paso County. Law enforcement spotted a vehicle associated with Montoya and followed it to a gas station where task force members saw Montoya lying down in the back seat.

He was arrested without incident and transported to the El Paso County Detention Facility where he is being held on a $250,000 and a $100,000 bond.

Robert R. Almonte, United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas, states, “This fugitive has proven he has very violent tendencies and I am thankful our task force was able to take him off of the streets. It was only a matter of time before he seriously injured or killed someone.”
