Group provides support for parents who have lost a child

By Stephanie Chavez

EL PASO — The El Paso chapter of Compassionate Friends hosted its second annual Compassionate Friends Conference to reach out to families who’ve lost a child.

Their goal is to raise awareness about their organization in hopes of lending support to parents and grandparents through their grieving process.

Terry Gallardo, the co-leader of the El Paso chapter said she joined the group seven years ago after losing her son.

“This has been our lifeline, when you first come into this group we have no idea how to handle grief. This group has helped us, we’re among other parents that are in the same boat we are,” she said.

She said you never get over the loss of a child, but helping other parents deal with their grief is just another way for her and her husband to manage theirs.

The group meets on the last Wednesday of every month at the Saint Paul Lutheran Church.
