Proposed Eastside Regional Park master plan revealed

People in far east El Paso got to see what Eastside Regional Park is set to look like.

A full rendering of the 92-acre park that will be off of Montana Avenue and Hueco Club Road was presented at a community meeting Wednesday night.

People ABC-7 spoke with said they feel like their voices were heard and can’t wait for construction to begin.

“In the process, you’ll see a lot of people out there, ‘looky-loos’ as they call them, checking things out,” Ismael Enriquez said. He can already imagine opening day at Eastside Regional Park, and said what he wants from his neighborhood park was heard loud and clear. “The sports fields for the kids because it keeps them out of trouble. For the elderlies, like myself, we want somewhere to go and walk around.”

The park will have baseball, softball, volleyball and handball courts. As well as soccer fields, a skate/bicycle motocross park, exercise loop and recreational pool.

For east side resident Gabriel Morales, the aesthetics caught his eye.

“A lot of public parks don’t have that entryway,” Morales said. “So to see that and the moment you drive in and see how huge the park actually is going to be … I think it’ll take a lot of people’s breath away, hopefully.”

City engineering spokesman Martin Bartlett said the park by the people is certainly for the people.

“This is not just a cookie-cutter park. This is the east side’s regional park. You’ll see interesting entryways, tree-lined park roads. It’s really going to be a show piece, not just for the east side but all of El Paso,” Bartlett said.

The plan still needs to go before city council to be approved before work can begin. A vote is expected this May or June.
