Socorro ISD considers stipend, pay increases for employees

The Socorro Independent School District board of trustees discussed whether or not certain positions deserve a stipend or pay raise Thursday night.

A study was conducted by a committee formed within the district for increases that would go into effect this July, if approved by the school board.

The workshop Thursday night was presented by the district’s chief human resources officer, Rudy Campoya, who said this is the first one conducted in the last 10 years for SISD.

District officials want to make sure pay is competitive against other major districts in El Paso and across the state.

During the presentation, trustees had a lot of questions as to how the study was conducted and how to be fair for all employees, since a single increase rate across the board is not being proposed.

“The board asks questions to try to get the information that they need to make a decision when this goes to approval,” Campoya said. “The next step is basically explaining to them in more detail what the committee did behind closed doors to try to come up with those values.”

If all stipend increases pass for athletic, performing arts and special teaching supplements positions as proposed from results of the study, it would cost SISD more than $740,000.
