Canutillo district seeks help for family who lost home in fire

A fire that ripped through a mobile home Thursday morning in Canutillo left a family of five with nothing but the clothes on their back.

The children — two boys and a young girl — attend Alderete Middle School in the Canutillo Independent School, where school officials are asking the public for assistance.

The Student Support Services Department inside the Lonestar Building at 7000 5th Street, is the point of contact and drop off location for assistance and donations (attached is a clothing size chart for the family).

Their mobile home was deemed a total loss after lint in the dryer sparked the a massive fire Thursday morning.

Fire departments from La Union, West Valley and Santa Teresa, as well the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire about the 10:30 a.m. Thursday on the 7200 block of 2nd Street.

A sheriff’s spokeswoman said the mobile home was engulfed in flames when deputies arrived. They tried to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers before it spread to a tree and neighboring mobile home.

The fire damaged the neighboring home’s roof and caused $90,000 worth of damage. Neither of the homeowners had insurance, and the Red Cross was on scene to assist the family.

The cause of the fire is being ruled as accidental, due to electrical problems with the dryer unit in the home.
