Cubs Route Chihuahuas

The Iowa Cubs defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas 8-3 Saturday night. The two clubs have split the first two games of the series.

After two quick groundouts to begin the top of the second inning, Iowa struck four straight singles and scored two runs to go ahead 2-0. Ramiro Pena’s RBI single cut the Iowa lead in half one inning later.

Iowa gained a two-run lead again on back-to-back doubles by Christian Villanueva and Rafael Lopez in the fourth inning. The I-Cubs went ahead 6-1 after a three-run fifth inning rally that included a solo home run by second baseman Arismendy Alcantara.

The Chihuahuas made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh with two runs on an RBI single by Melvin Upton Jr. and an RBI groundout by Yonder Alonso. Upton finished his eighth injury rehab game 1-for-5 with an RBI. Alonso went 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in his second rehab assignment game with the Chihuahuas.
