11 teenagers drown off Moroccan coast

Authorities say 11 teenagers have drowned in the Atlantic during a beach outing just south of the Moroccan capital after they were carried away by waves.

The report by the state news agency said five bodies have been recovered and six others are still missing and presumed drowned following lengthy searches by police of the waters near the town of Bouznika on Sunday.

Two were saved from drowning.

The victims were participating in an outing by a sports club from the nearby town of Ben Slimane that involved 46 people, mostly between the ages of 12 and 17.

Searches for the victims were carried out with two helicopters and a zodiac.

Morocco’s Atlantic coast often features rough waves but beaches have been packed amid hot weather.
