Former Sunland Park mayor-elect agrees to plea deal
What started as a scandal in Sunland Park has dragged out for three years and it could come to an Wednesday in a Las Cruces courtroom.
Former Sunland Park mayor-elect Daniel Salinas is expected to go before a judge to change his plea, his lawyer told ABC-7 he agreed to a plea deal.
Salinas faces 33 felonies for fraud and extortion.
In 2012, prosecutors said Salinas tried to sabotage the man running against him during the mayoral race.
Salinas allegedly hired someone to secretly videotape Gerardo Hernandez, his opponent, getting a lap dance.
The alleged plan was to blackmail Hernandez and get him to drop out of the race.
Salinas was elected mayor of Sunland Park, but never got to fulfill his duties. He was arrested shortly after the election.
Salinas is out on bond and forced to wear a monitoring device.
In addition, a judge could determine a punishment for Salinas.
