Ex-Sunland Park mayor-elect gets 3 years probation in plea deal over extortion charges

Former Sunland Park mayor-elect Daniel Salinas has pled guilty to a count of extortion and a count of conspiracy to commit extortion this afternoon.

The hearing took place in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Back in 2012, Salinas was charged with extortion after prosecutors said he secretly videotaped a mayoral opponent getting a lap dance.

Today, Salinas calmly approached the podium and pled guilty to the two counts.

The judge today sentenced him to three years probation. The maximum amount of jail time he faced was four-and-a-half years.

ABC-7 spoke to Salinas’ attorney after the hearing and he said there is an opportunity for Salinas to come back and try to dismiss the probation.

ABC-7 asked Salinas what he had to say to the people of Sunland Park and he had no comment.
