an attack on a historic black church leaves nine people dead. the gunman is still at large this morning. every penny counts as the el paso children’s hospital tries to dig itself out of bankruptcy. the abc-7 i-team is looking into the severance package for former hospital c-e-o larry duncan. and suing a hospital. a family says del sol is to blame for the death of their sister, ten months after she gave birth. “people in prayer, on a wednesday evening; a ritual, coming together, praying and worshipping god, to have an awful person come in and shoot them is — is inexplicable; obviously the most intolerable and unbelievable act possible.” developing now… the hunt is on for a gunman who killed 9 people who were praying inside a church late last night. this happened in charleston south carlina… in a predominantly african-american church. charleston”s mayor… who you just heard from… says this is being treated as a hate crime. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. a live look at stormtrack doppler radar is showing… currently around our region… here’s your day planner for today… expect skies, winds and temperatures in the by 8 am, by noon and for your drive home around 5 pm. we’ll talk more about what to expect for the rest of this work week and the weekend ahead coming up in your full forecast. back to our top story this morning… developing now… south carolina police are on the scene of a shooting at a historic african-american church in downtown charleston. a lone gunman has left nine dead after he began shooting at church goers. the church — emanuel methodist episcopal — was having a prayer meeting. the shooter is described as a man in his twenties, he’s white and has a shaved head. the search for him is still ongoing. just about an hour ago… police say they found surveilance video of the suspect. we will have more on this story… coming up later on good morning el paso. after the former c-e-o of el paso childrens hospital — larry duncan — resigned last year.. he continued to get a paycheck every two weeks. now that the hospital has filed for bankrupcy — we wanted to know if those payments would continue. “his severance agreement ha been completed and last payment was in april.” “so that was the final paymen then?” “correct. duncan resigned under pressure last april, when the county hospital revealed it wasn’t getting paid for services it provided the children’s hospital. duncan was at the helm when those service contracts were negotiated — which children’s now calls quote “ambiguous and lopsided.” after a massive two-year construction project on country club road… upper valley residents say there’s still plenty of room for improvement. the biggest issue — being the lighting. they say four miles of brand new streetlights are too bright, and they violate city ordinance because they’re not “dark sky compliant. city officials say the project manager didn’t follow city ordinance when installing the lights. city rep cortney niland’s office says they’re exploring several options to get the lights “dar sky” compliant. no word yet on what caused a fire in the lower valley yesterday morning. it happened at around 9-30 on the 82-hundred block of valle placido. crews say the fire started at the side of the house and almost spread to the next door neighbor’s home. firefighters were able to rescue two dogs that were in the backyard. no one was hurt. damage is estimated at 55-thousand dollars. in far east el paso… traffic is back to normal this morning after a garbage truck crashed into other vehicles. this was just before noon yesterday on i-10 and joe battle. the impact caused the truck to burst into flames. it was considered a haz-mat situation… which closed joe battle south. at , here’s a look at how your commute is shaping up this morning. the tx-dot traffic cams at … still to come on good morning el paso …. why a family is suing a local hospital and what the medical center has to say about it. also — after more than a century — the treasury department announces an extreme change coming to the ten dollar bill. but first – stormtrack weather! meteorologist krystal kleihas your complete forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
