Chihuahuas Outlast Salt Lake
Jedd Gyorko’s bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled the El Paso Chihuahuas to an 11-10 come from behind win Thursday night. The Chihuahuas trailed 6-1 in the second inning. It was the third straight game at Southwest University Park that ended with an El Paso walk-off win.
The two teams combined for 11 runs and 11 hits in the first two innings. The Bees, who came in with a strong .981 team fielding percentage, made four errors in the first two innings and five errors in the game.
The Chihuahuas trailed 10-8 in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and two strikes when Alex Dickerson wrapped a two-run, game-tying single into right field. Dickerson had fouled off four straight 1-2 pitches before the hit.
Cody Decker’s single to right field put the winning run on base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch runner Rico Noel stole second and advanced to third on Rocky Gale’s two-strike sacrifice bunt. Salt Lake intentionally walked the bases loaded before Gyorko’s game-ending hit landed inside the left field line.
Decker had four of El Paso’s 18 hits in the win. Jerry Sullivan and Kevin Quackenbush had scoreless relief outings to hold Salt Lake late in the game.
