Man barricaded inside East El Paso bank now in police custody
El Paso Police and FBI agents were called out to Yarbrough and Montwood at the location of the BBVA Compass Bank around 5:30 p.m.
El Paso Police tweeted that the incident was related to a barricaded subject.
FBI had jurisdiction over the scene since Compass Bank is federally insured.
The man, a 56-year-old Hispanic man, according to FBI agents, was taken into custody at around 8:45 p.m.
A witness tells ABC-7 that she could hear officers on a megaphone speaking Spanish and asking someone inside the bank named Carlos to pick up the phone.
Other witnesses said they heard a loud gunshot, but FBI did not confirm whether the man had a gun or an explosive, which was a concern to agents.
Authorities say it was not an attempted bank robbery and the man was disgruntled. He did not take any hostages, and authorities were able to successful evacuate the bank’s employees and the entire shopping center.
