Man who barricaded himself in East El Paso bank charged with making terroristic threats
A 56-year-old man has been charged with making terroristic threats after barricading himself in an East El Paso bank Monday afternoon.
El Paso Police were called to the Compass Bank in the 2100 block of Yarbrough shortly after 5 p.m. after someone reported a man inside the bank causing a disturbance.
According to the police affidavit, Ramos was in the office of a bank sales representative when Ramos became upset “because his checking account would not balance and because a $15.00 dollar credit card purchase had been declined.”
The bank manager met with Ramos and took him to his office where Ramos asked the manager to call the police, which he did.
Ramos allegedly became upset since the police did not arrive immediately and told the bank manager, “I am going to speed things up, there is a bomb in the bag, call 911 and the bomb squad,” according to the affidavit.
The bank manager was able to convince the man to allow everyone to leave the bank which left Ramos alone inside the bank.
The El Paso Police Department’s SWAT team, Crisis Management Team (Negotiators) and Bomb Squad were then called out to the scene. The FBI’s tactical units and negotiators also responded to assist in the incident due to the incident involving a bank. F.B.I.
At about 8:45 p.m., Ramos walked out of the bank and surrendered to police and FBI SWAT member without incident.
A police spokesman says that after careful consideration of the facts of this case it was determined that the best course of action was to charge Ramos on state charges rather than Federal charges.
No explosives were located at the scene and Ramos has been booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on the charge of Terroristic Threats. His bond was set at: $20,000.
