Local police union reacts to public sentiment toward police

the tv – it seems you hear about another police- involved shooting. and it’s both violence from and toward police officers. so we asked local law enforcement about what appears to be public hostility toward police. abc-7’s maria garcia live with perspective you’ll see only on abc-7: a chicago-area police officer was the eighth law enforcement officer shot and killed in the u.s in the last month. last week, here in texas a deputy was essentially executed at a gas station. surprisingly though – there were more officers killed by this time last year. during the last 12 months, six officers appear to have been targeted specifically because they worked in law enforcement. according to the law enforcement officers memorial fund which tracks law enforcement deaths. they say it’s too early to tell if officer deaths are trending up. but the local police union says it’s clear there’s amped up rhetoric against officers. and it appears to be a subset of an intensified conversation about race in the u-s. the president of the union though says public sentiment toward police always changes depending on current events. the difference now is the immediate spread of shooting videos – often without context: 08:29 you see a three second clip of a video and then you have thousands of people out there being stupid ‘oh we should go kill police officers.’ let’s riot, let’s protest, they don’t realize that their right to do that – a lot of officers have died to give them that right union president ron martin said he couldn’t comment on an el paso case where an autopsy recently revealed a man was shot in the back by police who initially reported he was charging at them.
