Charges could be filed against man in Las Cruces who threw drink at man in viral video

A video that’s gone viral out of Las Cruces is outraging residents in the community. The video was posted on Tuesday and has already gotten thousands of shares on Facebook and Twitter.

The video was originally posted on snapchat. It shows aman wearing a hood calmly walk up to a car, as if he’s been called over to it.

Then you see the driver throw a drink in the man’s face and drive away.

The caption reads “prank on a hobo” with a laughing face. We showed the video to the mayor, the Las Cruces police chiefalong with others in the community and they thought it was anything but funny.

“How are you going to sit here and splash someone with soda, water, coffee whatever liquid was in that cup and laugh about it?” Charles Miramontes said.

“It’s terrible. That’s just not what Las Cruces is all about. We hope that we can find this person as soon as possible to do something like that, that’s an assault really,” Mayor Ken Miyagishima said.

“It looks like it was a simple battery unless it was hot coffee. If it was hot coffee it could be worse, if it was a rather cold drink it could be simple battery,” Police Chief Jaime Montoya said.

ABC-7 caught up with the victim in the video, Tony Robles. While Robles isn’t homeless, he’s lived in Las Cruces almost his entire life and has very little.

“I did nothing wrong. I was just walking, they said come here want a cigarette? I went over there, they threw a glass of coke on my face you know,” Robles said.

Many in the community tell ABC-7 they normally see Robles walking along the streets of Las Cruces. Miramontes says after sharing that shocking video, support from complete strangers came pouring in.

“This man you known is going to think about this for the rest of his life but he’s going to remember the good that came out of it,” Ronny Enriquez said.

Las Cruces Police said they’re looking into the possibility of charges being pressed.
