52 dead in riot at northern Mexico prison

Fifty-two inmates were killed and 12 injured in a brutal fight between two rival factions at a prison in northern Mexico on Thursday, the state governor said.

It happened at the Topo Chico prison in Monterrey.

The riot broke out just six days before Pope Francis is scheduled to visit the Cereso prison in Juarez.

A fire also broke out of the prison. Images broadcast by Milenio Television showed crowd of people outside the prison. Some shook and kicked at the prison gates, demanding to be allowed in.

The fire appeared to have been extinguished around sunrise.

Mexico has seen deadly riots and other prison violence in the past.

At the same prison in Monterrey, three inmates were stabbed to death in February 2012.
