Montwood H.S. Football coach Chuck Veliz retiring

One of the most successful high school football coaches in El Paso’s history is retiring.

Montwood’s Chuck Veliz announced his retirement Wednesday, five days after the Socorro School District finalized an investigation into the way he accounted for fundraising money.

As ABC-7 reported in July, parents complained to the district that the accounting was not clear.

An SISD spokesman says the investigation was completed and there was a follow up last Friday.

Daniel Escobar said, “There were some findings that the systems weren’t followed as they should’ve been.” Escobar said the district took appropriate measures but couldn’t release details on a personnel matter.

Coach Veliz’s last day at Montwood is March 31st after coaching the Rams for 14 years and Del Valle for four years. Veliz won 134 games during his careers at both schools.

Veliz coached high school football for 30 years.
