EPPD warns public of phone scam

The El Paso Police Department is warning the public about the latest phone scam.

According to police, callers are attempting to extort money by demanding a ransom for a family member whom they say is being held hostage. The potential victims will hear distressed voices from the supposed hostage in the background, demanding that the caller meet the demands.

The calls usually include area codes from the United States and Mexico.

The police is reminding the public that they should not answer calls from unknown numbers and should not provide any personal information to callers.

This type of scam will usually continue in the same area for several weeks.
