EPPD identify 71-year-old man killed in pedestrian crash

The pedestrian killed last weekend along Interstate 10 East has been identified.

El Paso Police said 71-year-old Crescencio Garcia of Anthony, NM was killed April 9 as he crossed I-10 near near mile marker 17, near the Porfirio Diaz exit.

EPPD said Garcia was crossing from the inside shoulder towards the outside shoulder around 8 p.m. At the same time, a 2006 Honda CRV driven by 51-year-old Christian Gerstheimer was traveling east on I-10.

Gerstheimer was unable to avoid Garcia and crashed into him, said EPPD. As a result, Chavez sustained serious injuries. He was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation reveals the pedestrian on the roadway was a contributing factor in the collision. This is the 23 fatality of 2016 compared to 13 this time in 2015.
