Students and district employee react to Love’s arrest

Thursday evening the last school bell rang at Silva Magnet High School and students let out, one after another:

“I was pretty shocked,” Dionne Trevino, Silva Magnet High School student, said.

“I was surprised,” Ruby Maltos, another Silva student said.

Students expressed their surprise after seeing their Assistant Principle Nancy Love in handcuffs.

Every student ABC-7 spoke with said that despite her “by the book attitude” they liked her.

“She was really involved,” Maltos said.

Court documents reveal Love falsely reported to El Paso Independent School District Police –a student wanted to press charges on a teacher.

The documents allege Love was trying to get two teachers fired.

Teachers that were giving the FBI information about the alleged cheating scheme.

The documents even describe Love going as far as meeting at the restaurant Cabo Joe’s to coach a student on how to press charges.

Then she allegedly lied to a grand jury about the situation.

“I had mixed feelings because I’m a educator my self,” Patricia Scott said.

Scott is a counselor at Jefferson High School.

She’s also considered by some to be a hero. Scott was the first to step in and question the cheating scheme at Bowie High School orchestrated by former Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia.

Scott says despite “higher ups” creating cheating schemes, it was the students that were cheated out of an education.

“I absolutely witnessed students having some kind of a negative affect. They did not know their credits were taken away and in their minds they were all up to date with their credits getting ready for graduation,” Scott added. “It was not necessary. The only ones that gained anything were the administrators that got the extra money for not having failing schools at the time.”
