UPDATE: Man remains in stable condition following shooting

A scuffle over a gun resulted in one man shot and another temporarily in jail, police said.

Ricardo Fernandez, 31, was allegedly drunk and acting aggressive when he went to the home of his children’s mother on the 2800 block of Escarpa Drive in East El Paso. Fernandez demanded to speak to the woman and refused to leave, police said.

Robert Veloz, 30, who lives at the home, went outside and asked Fernandez to leave. When Fernandez refused, Veloz allegedly pointed a gun at Fernandez. Polcie said Fernandez grabbed the gun and a scuffle ensued. They said Veloz fired the weapon and shot Fernandez in the stomach.

Fernandez drove away, but Border Patrol agents spotted him nearby at the Vista Village Apartments, 10535 Montwood Drive. He was taken to Del Sol Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.

Veloz was take into custody, but later released. The District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.
