‘Dramas & Caballeros’ is a musical fusion in which Madame Ur y sus hombres and Orquesta Sinfnica Esperanza Azteca Ciudad Jurez Juvenil create a theatrical scene with a cabaret feeling, while relating the story of a woman who undertakes a dark and metaphorical journey, through different emotions conveyed by unique sounds and images.
Madame Ur y sus hombres are an independent musical alignment of the current music scene of Tijuana, Baja California. They combine blues, jazz, pop and rock, with a touch of musical revue and cabaret.
Orquesta Sinfnica Esperanza Azteca Ciudad Jurez orchestra and chorus consist of about 140 children and teenagers, ages 5 to 17.
‘Fiddler on the Roof — UTEP Dinner Theatre presents the celebrated Joseph Stein musical through May 15. Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, “Fiddler on the Roof” tells the story of a poor milkman who cares for his five daughters. ‘The Explorers Club’ — No Strings Theatre Company presents the madcap comedy by Nell Benjamin May 6-22 at Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Downtown Mall in Las Cruces. Directed by Algernon D’Ammassa. A witty spoof of all those bold Victorian adventurers who ravaged foreign lands and annihilated indigenous cultures in the name of science. The play is set in a stuffy, men-only club for explorers and scientists in Victorian London. Their world is brought to chaos when a woman scientist is proposed for membership, and she brings an aboriginal companion who rouses the ire of the Queen herself. The club is also set upon by an angry mob of Tibetan monks and a former colleague on a mission of vengeance.
Railroad Days — The 9th annual event, celebrating the anniversary of the first train coming to Las Cruces, is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 6-7, at the New Mexico Railroad and Transportation Museum in the Santa Fe Train Depot at Mesilla and Las Cruces avenues, west of the Downtown Mall (351 N. Throughout the event, the Doa Ana Modular Railroad Club will have their H-O model train layouts running and expert modelers will be on hand to answer questions.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will have a static locomotive on display Saturday; no rides. Inside the museum, Harvey Girl and railroad worker re-enactors from the Railroad and Transportation Museum of El Paso will talk about working for the railroads. Various museums from the area will have information tables. Musical entertainment by the Las Cruces Ukes and the Country Drifters.
In conjunction with Branigan Cultural Center, guided mural walks will be led through the neighborhood, and information about hobo signs and symbols will be available. Quilter Lynn Moseley will be creating a hobo signs quilt throughout the day. Outdoors, demonstrations of steam engines will take place hourly, weather permitting.
Smokey Bear Days — The Village of Capitan, N.M. will host two days of family fun and fire prevention and conservation exhibits at the 12th annual festival 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 6-7 at Smokey Bear Historical Park and throughout the community. Events includes vendors, educational activities, bike safety course and a parade. The event honors Smokey Bear, the famed bear cub that survived a fire in the Capitan Mountains and became a beloved symbol of fire prevention. All events are free. When Hot Springs, N.M., accepted a game show’s invitation for a town to change its name to Truth or Consequences, part of the reward for doing so was to have the show’s host be the guest of honor at a festival each year. Ralph Edwards fulfilled the promise for 50 years, and the community continues to celebrate every first weekend in May.
