here in the borderland. fort bliss is comemorating the true meaning behind today’s holiday. coming up a look at how the national cemetary honors the men and women who paid the ultimate price. for the second month in a row, texas is experiencing heavy flooding. with a small relief in sight, crews are now working to rescue people trapped inside their homes and cars. the latest up next. 2 people are dead after an officer involved shooting in houston. what police say led up to the shooting. today is memorial day… it’s more than just long weekend. a day to rember and honor all the men and women who have died serving the u-s armed forces. this is a look at arlington national cemetery wher over 200 thousand flags were place on the headstones. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. somewhat complex weather scenario will exist across southern new mexico and west texas for most of the week. a weak upper low in the southern branch of split flow will drift very slowly eastward across southern california into central arizona tonight through tuesday. this will induce and sustain a deep west to southwest flow across most of the cwa during this time with seasonably warm mostly dry weather occurring. the exception may be the far eastern areas including hudspeth and eastern otero counties. in this area the winds will have a slightly more southerly component with winds occasionally becoming southeasterly. consequently moisture will be a little more abundant here with surface dewpoints mostly lower 30s to lower 40s and precipitable water around .5 to .75 inch. the higher moisture will cause air mass to become ceremony at the fort bliss national cemetary later this morning. good morning el paso’s andrew j. polk is live with a look ahead. andrew? good morning stephanie. everyone is invited to come out here to fort bliss national cemetary this morning… for a ceremony honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, starting at 9 am. this is a look at last year’s ceremony. this year, brigadier general. kurt s. crytzer, commanding general of joint task force north, will be the keynote speaker. every memorial day, ft. bliss remembers all those who have fallen with their ceremony at ft. bliss national cemetery. hundreds are expected to attended the memorial day ceremony – featuring a military band, wreath layings and 21 gun salutes… to honor all americans who have sacrificed their lives while serving the nation in war. public is urged to access the cemetery via the south entrance off of haan road on fort bliss. public parking is located on the east and south perimeter wall of the cemetery. only official vehicles supporting the ceremony will be allowed in the cemetery. according to fort bliss, civilians without department of defense ids or valid passes should obtain a pass at the chaffee or buffalo soldier visitor control centers. reporting live at fort bliss… andrew j. polk, abc-7. meanwhile, in las cruces… american meanwhile, in las cruces… american legion post 10 – gathered sunday afternoon to lay a wreath of remembrace in honor of the veterans buried at st. joseph cemetery. aside from rembering our veterans, the group says its another important reminder about what those serving do to protect our country: “i see a lot of older generatio people that respect our veterans i think some of the younger ones dont understand. they fought for our freedoms. thats important to me and to all veterans.” today, take some time to reflect on your freedoms and rember those who have fought to protect them. for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice – we thank you. for those who are serving or have served – thank you! heavy flooding is causing a widespread of damage and deaths in central texas. severe thunderstorms turned into a major flash flood late thursday into friday.. and although the rain has stopped, many areas remains clogged. authorities confirm atleast 6 people were killed from flood-related incidents. rescue boats helped dozens left stranded in their homes or trapped in their cars. evacuations are underway in parts of washington county as the state braces for more rain. near galveston— the coast guard is searching for a man who went missing after being swept away in the san luis pass. thirty-seven- year-old stephen espedal was part of a group that rescued a woman who also was swept into the water. the woman was able to make it to shore and two others were rescued by boat, but espedal remains missing. the coast guard deployed boat and helicopter crews to conduct the search, which is expected to continue today. rescue workers are using boats to pull out some people stranded by flooding in south carolina. what used to be tropical storm bonnie has dumped about six-inches of rain near ridgeland. the rain inundated some areas near the town and partially shut down interstate-95 sunday. but bonnie later lost some of its punch and it’s been downgraded to a tropical depression. the national hurricane center says the storm is now stalled northwest of charleston. it could still bring up to three more inches of rain in the coming days. back in texas… eight people were shot — two of them fatally — on the west side of houston police said one of the suspected shooters is among the dead. the other — hospitalized in critical condition. houston’s interim police chief said a victim was found dead in a car with a gunshot wound to the head. three wounded victims were also hospitalized – but the police chief did not know their conditions. two constables were treated for their injuries and released. the incident began sunday morning. when officers arrived they were immediately shot at. the police chief said the suspects also fired on a police helicopter: we don’t know what started this, but what we do know is they were shooting randomly just at whoever came upon the scene. the city of houston issued an alert about 11-40 a-m central time for residents to shelter in place. residents were asked to close doors, windows and central time for residents to shelter in place. residents were asked to close doors, windows and curtains and stay in an interior room if possible. visitors were screaming as a 450- pound gorilla dragged a little boy at the cincinnati zoo saturday. that’s according to a woman who took video of the incident that’s spreading across the internet. she says she recorded the footage by coincidence. officials say a four- year-old boy crawled through a barrier and landed in a gorilla moat. the gorilla then picked him up and and dragged him around for ten-minutes. zoo officials ended up shooting the animal, saying tranquilizing him would be too risky for the boy: “we saw a little boy’s face and when he saw his face, instantly his face took off running, so we knew he was being dragged by the gorilla. the gorilla then took him to one end of his habitat and the little boy started screaming again.” the zoo chose not to tranquilize the gorilla because it would’ve taken awhile for it to take affect. workers say he could’ve had an aggressive reaction while holding the child. the zoo is open, but gorilla world is closed until further notice. 6-07… weather and traffic on the 7s… somewhat complex weather scenario will exist across southern new mexico and west texas for most of the week. a weak upper low in the southern branch of split flow will drift very slowly eastward across southern california into central arizona tonight through tuesday. this will induce and sustain a deep west to southwest flow across most of the cwa during this time with seasonably warm mostly dry weather occurring. the exception may be reporter mauricio casillas for a look at the traffic this morning good morning mauricio … at the fallen. coming up, a preview of today’s events the nations capital. / and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
