Mayor Leeser back on the job after leave of absence to “address health issues”

Mayor Oscar Leeser is back at work a week early after taking a leave of absence in May to address health issues.

Leeser originally planned to take four weeks off, but is now ready to get back to work. “I’m getting there. I appreciate the asking and concern of all the public. Thank you,” he said.

“We are back and we will continue to work the best we can this coming week. I am supposed to be off another week, but I feel I needed to be here this week. It was very important for me to be here this week,” Leeser said.

In 2015, Leeser battled an aggressive form of skin cancer. At the time, Leeser said his wife urged him to get checked. The cancer was treatable because doctors found it early, Leeser said.

Tuesday, City Council is expected to discuss possible action to address the City Ethics Commission’s ruling concerning City Manager Tommy Gonzalez.

The commission voted to give Gonzalez a letter of admonishment for authorizing the placement of speed humps in violation of city protocol and a letter of notification for authorizing pavement of an alley that should have remained unpaved.
