2016 Sun Court announced during coronation ceremony
The Sun Bowl Association officially announced the 2016 Sun Court on Friday during a coronation ceremony at El Paso Country Club.
The members of the 2016 Sun Court are: Ariana Martell, Stephanie Figueroa, Katie Gallegos, Hannah Legge, Queen Katherine Carroll-Miller, Lady-in-Waiting Clarissa Gardea, Emery Henschel, Lauren E. Pena, Claire Lazo-Kim, Kayla Quintero and Macy McBeth, and Sarah Elisabeth Medrano.
“We have a great court, very diverse group of young ladies again this year,” Executive Director Bernie Olivas said in a press release. “We are excited for these young ladies to represent El Paso and the Sun Bowl Association.”
Carroll-Miller and Gardea were both Sun Princesses on the 2015 Sun Court. All 12 members of the court are from El Paso.
In order to be selected, applicants must be full-time students and are selected on poise, appearance, personality, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to demonstarte knowledge of El Paso.
Ariana Martell is a senior at Texas Tech University and is the co-founder of SisterHoodies, which collects coats and donates them to the less fortunate in El Paso. She is a graduate of Eastwood High School.
Stephanie Figueroa is a junior at UTEP majoring in computer science. Sheworks for the Center for Civic Engagement and is a graduate of Clint High School.
Katie Gallegos is also a junior at UTEP majoring in marketing. She is a peer educator for the UTEP Wellness Program and is a graduate of the Silva Health Magnet.
Hannah Legge is a sophomore at Texas State majoring in political science and minoring in sociology. She was seleced as a Texas State Bobcat Preview Representative and is a graduate of Americas High School.
Sun Queen Katherine Carroll-Miller is a senior at Texas Tech University majoring in Exercise and Sport Sciences with a minor in Biology and Spanish. She was a Princess on the 2015 Sun Court and is a graduate of Franklin High School.
Lady-in-Waiting Clarissa Gardea is a current student of the chool of Nursing at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in El Paso. She was also a Princess on the 2015 Sun Court and is a graduate of Burges High School.
Emery Henschel is a sophomore at Tulane University majoing in Art History and Political Economy. She is the Vice President of the Student Alumni Ambassadors at Tulane and is a graduate of El Paso High School.
Lauren E. Pena is a junior at UTEP majoring in English. She is a recipient of the Presidential Excellence Award at UTEP and is a graduate of Eastwood High School.
Claire Lazo-Kim is a junior at Baylor University majoring in speech pathology. She worked at the El Paso Children’s Hospital last summer and is a graduate of Coronado High School.
Kayla Quintero is a sophomore at UTEP majoring in pre-pharmacy. She is a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Rescue Mission here in El Paso and is a graduate of El Dorado High School.
Macy McBeth is a senior at the University of Oklahoma, majoring in English Literature and minoring in Spanish. She is a mmember of Delta Gamma and was an El Paso Panhellenic Scholarship Recipient and PITF Scholarship Recipeient in 2016.
Sarah Medrano is a junior at Texas A&M University majoring in international studies with a focus in communications and media. She is currently the Media and Communication Officer for the Lone Survivor Foundation, Texas A&M Chapter is a graduate of Eastwood High School.
