Excited students attend orientation at new Las Cruces medical school

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine opened its doors to 162 students Monday.

The 80,000 square foot building took about 18 months to build. It is located at 3501 Arrowhead Drive across the street from Aggie Memorial Stadium.

The school is privately funded and the entire project cost about $105 million.

There were some back-to-school jitters from students ABC-7 spoke with. Many came to Las Cruces from the east coast. Some are choosing to live on NMSU’s campus, others chose to live in apartments on their own.

“I’m just in shock, first of all it’s my dream this is happening because I actually interviewed one year ago so I’ve took a year of just waiting for that dream world out there,”Rory Siegel, a first year medical student, said.

“The simulation labs are awesome and everyone’s excited to have us here so I’m just like ‘ahh!’ I’m excited like I want to study,” said new studentLarissa Check.

Check said she plans on working at least two years as a doctor in Las Cruces once she graduates. The students will receive their first white coats in a ceremony on Saturday .
