Las Cruces man accused of choking, beating girlfriend

Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of beating his girlfriend and refusing to allow her to call for help.

Manuel Aguilar, 36, of the 1900 block of north Solano Dr., is charged with one count each of aggravated battery against a household member, battery against a household member and interference with communication.

Investigators learned that on May 30, 2017, Aguilar and his 35-year-old girlfriend were in bed when he accused her of having an affair.

Aguilar allegedly threw a blanket over her the victim’s head and attempted to strangle her, police say. Aguilar is also accused of punching the woman and pulling her back onto the bed, by her hair, when she tried to leave.

When the victim tried to call police, Aguilar allegedly knocked the cell phone from her hands.

The woman was finally able to call a relative who came to pick her up.
