High school baseball players get a chance to impress at El Paso Baseball Select Showcase

The El Paso Hall of Fame hosted its inaugural El Paso Baseball Select Showcase as inductees directed and scouts watched the Showcase Skills evaluation at the El Paso Community College baseball field.

“This is not one of those camps that you go and there’s instructions,” EL Paso Baseball Hall of inductee and showcase director, Jerry Valdez said. “Nah, there’s a little bit of feedback, do this do that, but what we do is evaluation.”

The players being evaluated are all current 2018 high school juniors and seniors.

They were nominated to participate either by a high school coach, college coach or pro scout.

At this showcase players had the chance to show off their skills to college scouts from New Mexico State University, the University of Oklahoma and others.

“So all these college coaches and scouts do is (ask) ‘okay what does he have to play at the next level?'” Valdez said. “So we try to give them a little feedback of what they need to work on for the next couple years so colleges, and even pro scouts, give them opportunities to play at the next level.”

Along with the college scouts were to pro scouts from the San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals at the showcase watching the high school juniors and seniors.

“El Paso is a small community and it’s kind of hard to get D-I and pro scouts out here,” Eastwood incoming senior catcher, Chris Simms said. “This opportunity is excellent for El Paso.”
