Socorro mayor elected in runoff, unofficial results

More than 700 voters turned out to cast their ballots for the next mayor of Socorro.

Elia Garcia trumped Ivy Avalos by garnering 51 percent of the electorate, 383 votes.

The runoff election also included a vote for city representative. Ralph Duran was elected to the seat of district 2, with 58 of the 110 votes.

The election comes at a crucial time as the city is dealing with major flooding issues. Council recently voted this past week to assess the damage properties and present that information to council at their next meeting.

Once they have more information on their decision, we will let you know.
