EPPD: Drunk Driver punched police officer, attempted to run away

A man accused of driving drunk punched the police officer who pulled him over and attempted to run away from the scene, police officials said.

Mykal Abraham Santana, 28, is charged with DWI, Possession of Controlled Substance (cocaine) and Assault on a Peace Officer.

Police said a police officer assigned to the department’s DWI Task Force pulled Santana over on the 1100 block of Piedras at 2:20 am Tuesday.

Santana was allegedly driving at 58 mph in a 30 miles per hour zone. Santana, allegedly found to be intoxicated, punched the police officer in the stomach and ran away, police said.

The officer chased Santana and took him into custody in the 2800 block of Wheeling.

An investigation revealed Santana had two plastic baggies of cocaine inside the vehicle, police said.

Santana was reportedly wanted on four outstanding municipal warrants. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on bonds totaling $10,224.
