El Paso police identify man shot by officers

El Paso police have identified the man shot and killed by police Friday afternoon..

Investigators say officers responded to a family violence assault call in the 3800 block of Mountain in Central El Paso Friday around 1pm.

Information was relayed to responding officers that a male wielding a machete was allegedly assaulting his wife.

When they arrived they heard screaming and yelling inside the home and entered the house.

A male identified as 43 year old Jorge Hidalgo was wielding a machete as he stood next to a female in one of the bedrooms.

Officers gave verbal commands to Hidalgo who reportedly ignored them, turned towards the officers and raised his machete. Both officers discharged their firearms striking Hidalgo.

Hidalgo was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Investigators from the Crimes Against Persons unit, the Shooting Review Team and Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

The officers involved are 3 and 7 year veterans of the police force.

Both were placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated
